The Mane Society

I remember being a kid and having this long, curly hair that was down to my waist line. The only issues I had was when my dad tried to tame my mane, which always resulted in huge hair knots and a crazy ponytail on the side of my head. As I got older, I got into coloring, highlights and flat ironing my hair on a regular basis. Being naive and thinking I knew better, the lack of attention I was paying to my hair ended in me having the "heat damage blues". My curl pattern was completely destroyed and gone. So much of my hair had broken off. Overall, my hair was just not healthy.

In the past year, I have been much more conscious as to what products I use in my hair, the styles I choose and really just embracing my natural curly hair. The hardest part for was establishing a natural hair regime that I could stick too. It is truly a lifestyle change.

To start off:

  • Get a good trim: Gradually start getting rid of those relaxed/damaged ends
  • Read those labels: Stop using and get rid of your shampoos that contains sulfates (I love the Organix line)
  • Start co-washing: Conditioner wash your hair. I shampoo every other week and co-wash in-between
  • Deep condition: Curly hair is thirsty hair. Deep condition your hair once a week to revive your hair by adding moisture and nutrients that our hair thrives off of
  • Research: Everybody has a different hair type and some things work better for some than others. Get on YouTube to find different style and routines and try ones that make sense to you. I will also be posting regimes and styles that have worked for me.
What has worked best for me to stick with being natural is doing hair challenges. I am starting the "No Direct Heat for 90 Days" Challenge. To me this mean no heat applied directly to my hair at full force, i.e. 420 degree flat iron heat, 1900 watt blow dryer, etc. I don't see the harm in sitting under a hooded dryer though because this type of heat is no where near as damaging as direct heat. Join in if you like!

What regimes or products have you used to regain healthy hair?
